Health and Safety

Health & Safety is about preventing people from being harmed by work or becoming ill through work. This is so important that the law says you must not put yourself, your workers or the public in danger. The Health & Safety law applies to all businesses regardless of their size. It covers employees whether they are permanent or temporary, full time or part time: the self-employeed; young people doing work experience; apprentices; charity workers; mobile workers and homeworkers.
The Health & Safety law gives powers to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) to enforce the various Acts and regulations. Officers can enter premises and inspect without warning if they believe the regulations have been breached. Another enforcing body is the Local Authority through its Environmental Health Dept. The Fire authorities enforces the new Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 which came into force on 1st October 2006.
The enforcing authority may serve alteration notice if the features of a premise or their use consititute a serious risk to relevant person and can request changes to be made, or they may issue an enforcement notice which tells the employer to carry out the remedy action within a certain time, or they can issue a prohibition notice if the Inspector believes there is a serious issue that the use of the premises ought to be restricted. It is also possible for the enforcing bodies to take the matter to court if they think the situation is serious enough.
Employers feel the strain of increasing number of legislations particularly if they do not see direct financial reward. Our aims are to help you meet your legislative requirements, reduce the risk of harm and ill health through work, reducing the likelihood of any legal action and costs. A compliant organisation is far more likely to attract new business and also benefit from increased productivity through a satisfied workforce.
